I just don't see the emotional depth needed to shake up an active JWs world. I'm only basing this on the short excerpts. I'm interested in seeing how the whole film plays out.

New Ex-JW Documentary To Be Released
by discreetslave inabout filmtruth be told is a feature length documentary that explores the lives of several individuals raised in the jehovahs witnesses religion.
the title of the film refers to the tendency by jehovahs witnesses to regard their beliefs exclusively as the truth.. the documentary is not an indictment of religion but rather a retrospective.
in a series of informal interviews, former jehovahs witnesses discuss life experiences within the organization including the impact the religion had on their childhood and family, schooling, adolescence, and approaches to dating and marriage.

July 15th WT- Don't Research " False Stories " - Inspired by Satan !
by flipper ini know the poster lost generation made a fantastic thread on this july 15th apostate article, however - i noticed some very powerful points on pg.
17 paragraphs 9 - 11 which weren't brought out that i feel needed to be touched on.
as was brought out in his thread this article told jw's to avoid apostates because they are " mentally diseased " allegedly and to avoid their web sites, not read their literature, watch t.v.

Based on the comments at my hall, I'm going to have to be very careful about expressing any views that aren't WT approved. Our elders warned against researching JWs on the internet. They said the truth is only at WATCHTOWER.org. Everything else is either a potential waste of time or a potential snare of Satan.
Contrary to what was pointed out about the general UK feeling about hardcore apostates, my hall had comments about how apostates are subtle and will work from within the congregation to introduce one false idea at a time. In other words, they really stuck to the lesson and put the congregation on alert.
I talked to a couple of close friends about the lesson afterward and they, unprovoked by me, found two major issues with the lesson. First, calling someone who doesn't agree with a WT teaching "mentally diseased." Second, discouraging research.
We all know that a portion of the JWs don't pay much attention to the meetings. But for those that paid attention to this lesson, I think it the feelings about it are going to be split down the middle. Both sides will agree that it was an intense article. Some will feel that it is just what we need because Satan is out to gobble us all up since we're so close to the end. Others will feel, as my friends mentioned, that it was a bit over the top.

Stressful Session with Uber-Zealous Parents--The Mermaid needs a hug!
by Cadellin inokay, for those of you who don't know, i was raised jw by really great though uber-zealous parents.
i'm now an adult and have been inactive for about two years due a bunch of reasons, the primary one (or at least the one that got the ball rolling) being the pathological intellectual dishonesty of the wt in how it handles secular quotes and citations.
anyway, my parents are aware of all that and have left the issue alone for about the last year.

IMO, it looks weak. Not that I want some over-the-top, "Six Screens" kind of thing but the stories in the excerpts just aren't very interesting. If you aren't a JW, there's very little appeal here. The examples given aren't really extreme enough to register a response. On this board, we tend to sympathize with those who say, "I felt like I couldn't go to college," or "I couldn't do all the sexual stuff I wanted to," or "Poor me - I had to play hoops in my dress clothes," because many of us have been there. But as for it being the subject of a film, I don't think people will care. And even if an active JW watches this, all they'll see are former JWs with complaining spirits.
Think about the kind of documentary stories that really get people talking. GASLAND, Capturing the Friedmans, Inconvenient Truth, Bowling for Columbine. These films are compelling, controversial, and incredibly entertaining. I can't say the same about this film , based on the trailer and the excerpts. In fact, this very board is full of stories much more gripping than those in this film.
But I digress. Maybe the film-maker had no intentions of making a big impact either in the JW community, or the world outside it.
At least it was shot in high quality and edited well.

July 15th WT out - Coming out Swinging at Apostates Hard
by LostGeneration inthis is one of the most aggressive watchtowers i think i have ever read.. four study articles on not "following the crowd" not following unrealities(page 13) not following false teachers, meaning apostates of course(p 15).
avoiding false teachers means "refusing to read their literature, watch tv programs that feature them, examine their web sites, or add comments to their blogs.
(para 7, pg 16).

Yet another July 15th 2011 WT thread...use caution--deconstruction at work
by sd-7 ini figured i'd start off by just examining the language used in the july 15th, 2011 watchtower, page 15-16, paragraphs 4-7.. apostates are like:.
1. ravenous wolves.
9. their own ideas.

Cadellin, I've had similar experiences with JW friends and family. It's largely based on perspective. In your example, the facts of the situation are: you went to college, developed better critical thinking and analysis skills, sharpened your mind, and learned the value of being skeptical. Your perspective on this is that it was a good experience because these basic skills will serve you well in your life. Your parent's perspective is that it was a bad experience because the Society was right: college corrupts the mind with "so-called" critical thinking and creates skeptics, not believers. Same situation, two ways of looking at it.
I've been in the middle of intense debates with JWs about various issues and suddenly realized, we agree on the facts, we're syaing the same things, it's just the application (perspective) that causes the division. What something means to me and what it means to a JW are two very different things.
So now, I just play dumb and try to avoid these types of discussions.
Oh, I almost forgot...*hugs*

Common Misconceptions Re: Evolution
by cantleave inthis is another cut and paste, but i make no apology (unless it has been posted on here already), as it is very informative.
evolution is one of the best supported, most elegant, and most powerful theories in all of science.
as it stands, it is the best explanation that we have for the diversity of life on earth.
